Smashing seasonal fat gain
Look- during the holidays you’re going to go out. You’re going to get together with other people, as that’s what we do.
Obviously you want to enjoy yourself, but you don’t want to wake up a month from now from your food induced coma looking like Chubby Magoo.
There are a couple of factors at play. I’m assuming at this point you’re smart enough to realize you should be at minimal, performing the workouts provided in Dirty Little Book.
I’m going to give you a few "light- bite" tips to crush the cravings for that delicious food, while still letting you enjoy the holidays.
1) Eat a snack at home BEFORE you go out. Doesn’t matter if you’re going to a restaurant or your friend’s house- chances are there will be plenty of delicious, delectable foods calling your name. You WILL be tempted by the food. It’s natural.
Have a small meal before you leave the house. A nicely balanced snack (protein, carbs and fat) will stabilize your blood sugar and give you energy. It also gives you a boost to your will power- which will come in handy.
There are also physiological factors such as hunger hormones that are fired off after a snack, which signal to your brain that you’re “full”. This will result in less overall food intake when you get in front of the goodies.
2) Watch your appetizer intake. Often times, your destination will have appetizers- fried and full of fat and calories. Don’t deprive yourself, but give yourself a limit- maybe 3 pieces of your favorite thing. Don’t eat because everyone else is either. Take the time to slowly enjoy your appetizer. Chew slowly and take time in between bites. Don’t just wolf it down.
3) Keep your intake of the calorie- laden drinks down. Holiday time is notorious for consumption of high- calorie drinks- egg nog, alcohol, creamy stuff... mmmm.
Here's the deal. Dilute, don't deprive! No, I don't mean pour water into your egg nog. I mean if you're having your favorite drink, follow it up with a glass of water or diet soda each time. If you would have had 4 glasses, now you'll have 2 glasses and 2 glasses of water. That's half the calories! Will you really miss those extra drinks anyway? Probably not. Most people just have a drink in their hand as a way to be comfortable in a social situation.
Holiday time is not the time to go on a fitness competitor style diet. It’s not the time to change your entire world. It's the time to enjoy yourself while maintaining your shape.
It’s a cliché these days, but it still holds true- everything in moderation
